Driver Assessment Services
Intoxicated Driver Program
In Wisconsin, all drivers convicted of alcohol or drug-related traffic
violations are court ordered to make an appointment within 72 hours of their
conviction (the 72-hour time line does not include weekends and/or holidays)
with an approved assessment facility for an assessment of the driver's alcohol
or drug use and development of an appropriate driver safety plan. In addition,
the Wisconsin Department of Transportation can request that you complete an
assessment based on an arrest, prior to conviction.
Failure to contact the assessment facility to schedule the appointment within
the 72-hour time frame will result in license suspension. Where you live
determines where you need to have the assessment done. There is only one
designated assessment facility in each county. In Waukesha County you must have
the assessment completed at the Addiction Resource Council, Inc.

ADDICTION: Why Can’t They Just Stop
This 4-week, free
community education series is designed to explain some of the complexities of
addiction and recovery. People struggling with addiction are often viewed as
either being weak-willed or having some form of sudden awakening and turning
their life around. Unfortunately, these extremes obscure the complexity of
addiction. The truth is that addiction changes the brain in ways that can make
recovery much more difficult than “just stopping.”
The series is divided into four, 2-
hour presentations that include a video from the groundbreaking HBO
documentary ADDICTION, followed by discussion lead by a trained addiction
professional.
Session Topics:
1. What
is Addiction? and
Understanding Relapse
2. The
Search for Treatment: A Challenging Journey and
The Adolescent Addict
3. Why
is Addiction a Disease of the Brain?—An Interview with the Director of
the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Nora Volkow, M.D. and
What Causes Alcoholism and
What Constitutes Effective Treatment?—An Interview with the Director of
Treatment and Recovery Research at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

STOP AND THINK: Underage Alcohol & Other Drug Use Lifestyle Risk Reduction Program
In Waukesha County , many Police Departments allow first-time underage drinking
violators an opportunity to avoid the consequences of a citation and a court
appearance by participating in the Stop and THINK Underage Alcohol & Other Drug
Use Restorative Justice & Lifestyle Risk Reduction Program. The goals of this
program are to prevent alcohol or drug related health and impairment problems by
increasing abstinence and reducing high risk choices related to alcohol- and
other drug-related problems among youth under age twenty-one (21) and to promote
behavior change and help people protect the things they value.
Stop and THINK includes a 12-hour class with one individual Follow-Up
Meeting attended 30 days following the course. The course is offered monthly.
Participants need to
register for the class within 72 hours of the conviction or offense (the 72 hour
time line does not include weekends and/or holidays). If the participant
does not register within 72 hours, does not finish the class or complete other
recommendations, the referring police department or court will be notified and
the participant will face the possibility of
punitive court consequences (possible citation or referral to court with all the
accompanying penalties) .
Some courts may require an assessment be done
before attending any programming. If you are a Waukesha County resident, that
assessment is done at the Addiction Resource Council. If you are not a Waukesha
County resident, you may contact the Addiction Resource Council to obtain
information on the designated assessment facility in other counties.
Participants in the class receive screening to determine if an individual
assessment is required in addition to completing the education. If an
alcohol/other drug assessment is recommended, completing the assessment is
required for successful completion of the class. The assessment will determine
if any additional referrals to education or treatment are needed. Failure to
successfully complete the assessment and recommendations will result in
reporting that non-compliance to the police department, court or other referring
agency. Such non-compliance could result in additional consequences such as
fines or loss of driving privileges.

Family Intervention Training
Get Your Loved One Sober
(GYLOS)
GYLOS is a program designed to assist family members and
concerned others in improving the quality of their own lives while at the
same time making sobriety a more rewarding option for their loved ones than
drinking or using other drugs. This compassionate yet effective approach is
based on the scientifically validated Community Reinforcement and Family
Training (CRAFT) model. The course provides the guidance and
tools that family and concerned others need in order to recognize how they
and their loved ones interact as well as how to change those patterns to
achieve healthier, happier results.
Get Your Loved One Sober, is a
seven-week facilitated discussion of the book, Get Your Loved One
Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening by Robert
J. Meyers, Ph.D. and Brenda L. Wolfe, Ph.D. There is no fee to attend
the class, but participants will be required to have access to the paperback
book, which is available through local bookstores or at the Addiction
Resource Council for $15. Each week requires that participants read two
chapters with designated assignments in preparation for the discussions and
role playing practices facilitated by Council staff.
