October 29th - Treating the Heart of Addiction

Presented by Dr. Ken Martz

Session Description:

There has been recent emphasis on the role of beliefs, motivation, and medication in the treatment of disorders, including substance use disorder and gambling disorder. This session examines the role of emotion in the development and maintenance of these disorders, as well as the role of emotions in treatment. As we move toward medical models of treatment, discussion considers the heart of emotions and therapeutic alliance as central parts of the change process to establish freedom from the harmful behavioral processes and attainment of long-term recovery.

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1: Participants will be able to identify the role of emotions in the development, maintenance, and resolution of substance use disorder and gambling disorders.

Objective #2: Participants will be able to identify the role of 5 key emotions, including fear, anger, and grief.

Objective #3: Participants will be able to identify the role of emotions in deepening the therapeutic alliance.

Presenter Bio

Kenneth J. Martz, Psy.D. MBA. is a licensed psychologist. He has worked in the treatment and management of addiction (including gambling) for the past 30 years across settings including outpatient, residential, and hospital settings. He was formerly the Special Assistant to the Secretary for the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Policy Director in Substance Use Disorders of the Governor’s Policy Office. Dr. Martz has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University. He has authored a dozen publications, six bestsellers, including the international bestseller Manage My Emotions, translated into multiple languages. He has over 100 local, national, and international presentations in the addictions treatment field.


November 5th - VapeLife, Liberty & The Pursuit of Fat Clouds: Early Intervention into Adolescent Nicotine & Cannabis Vaping

Presented by Kriya Lendzion

Session Description:

With nicotine and THC vaping products becoming stronger, more enticing, and easier to hide, youth face escalating risks—while their perception of harm declines under the influence of social media and targeted marketing. This webinar equips clinicians with “teen whispering” strategies to build trust, motivate change, and foster healthier choices through motivational interviewing, CBT, and solution- focused tools. Participants will also gain parent engagement techniques, guidance on navigating ethical and legal issues with minors, and ready-to-use handouts for immediate application in clinical and educational settings.

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1: Deliver accurate, relevant and impactful psychoeducation on nicotine and cannabis vaping using a harm-reduction framework.

Objective #2: Effectively implement Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral, and Solution-Focused approaches specifically to brief intervention work with substance-using adolescents in ways that enhance therapeutic trust, self-awareness, and motivation to change.

Objective #3: Partner with parents in creating supportive home environments that reduce youth vaping and promote lasting behavior change.

Objective #4: Apply relevant laws and ethical standards when addressing substance use with minors.

Presenter Bio

Originally inspired by her own personal journey through teen addiction, Kriya Lendzion, has worked in the fields of prevention, early intervention, and treatment of addictive disorders for over 30 years. In her roles as a school counselor, adolescent mental health therapist, addictions clinician, and prevention specialist, she has partnered with parents, schools, and community organizations across the globe to help youth avoid and shift substance use and other self-destructive choices.


November 12th - Gambling Disorder - A Highly Co-occurring Addiction That Few Want to Talk About

Presented by Susan Sheridan Tucker

Session Description:

Gambling disorder continues to be an addiction that receives little mention in most addiction circles, yet 65% of those with a gambling disorder also have other addictions and/or mental health issues. This presentation will provide an overview of the signs of gambling disorder and who are the most vulnerable. Why we need to be screening for gambling disorder.

Presenter Bio

Susan Sheridan Tucker earned her degree in English Literature and Political Science from NYU after working on Wall Street to support her way through school. She was in the first class in which trading options was part of the licensing curriculum, which was her first exposure to gambling. Susan received her master’s in Urban Planning at Hunter College and began a career as a planning consultant. Susan worked to support accessible housing, environmental sustainability and other local projects. 

Since then, Susan’s career has focused on nonprofit management, building organizations and advocating for those with diminished voices. Susan has worked with several organizations including the Minnesota Alliance on Problem Gambling, where she currently serves as the Executive Director. 

Susan and her husband moved to Minnesota in 1992, where they raised two daughters. Susan is active in her church, and enjoys traveling, cycling and gardening in her spare time. 


November 19th - Nitazine and Xylazine: Navigating Trends in SUD

Presented by Fredrick Dombrowski

Session Description:

The opiate epidemic continues to unfold with additional substances exacerbating the problem. Among these substances are Nitazine (more powerful than Fentanyl) and Xylazine (rendering Narcan almost useless). This session will review the recent history of overdose deaths in the United States, leading to the development and use of these additional substances. The signs, symptoms, and effects of such an overdose will be explained. Attendees will identify how to use Motivational Interviewing tools to assist clients who are using these substances.

Learning Objectives:

Objective #1: Summarize the basics of Xylazine and Nitazine usage.

Objective #2: Explain the potential life changing physical impacts Xylazine and Nitazine.

Objective #3: Describe options to use Motivational Interviewing for those who are using these substances.


Presenter Bio

Fredrick Dombrowski is the AMHCA Past President and has extensive experience treating those living with co-occurring disorders since 1998. He has been a supervisor and director for multiple programs including inpatient, outpatient, and forensic treatment. Currently a Department Chair at the University of Bridgeport, he is focused on experiential learning through a perspective of cultural humility and an equitable clinical care. He has recently published the book Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders and has appeared on television, radio, and internet advocating for the helping professions. He has won several awards for his work with marginalized populations.
